Not sure if it would be too sci-fi for you but the Galactic Melieu series by Julian May is pretty incredible

I watched this as an online recommendation replacement for Supernatural. Disappointed and so weak after watching it.

As someone who was also very disappointed by the fake out sad ending, I've actually decided that I disagree that it wasn't necessary. Well, the fake out wasn't necessary, but Yumi coming back was. Her choice to pull herself back into the physical realm rather than release herself into the spiritual realm was the culmination of her character arc where she learns to value her own happiness. The issue isn't so much that it happened as that that Sanderson didn't show us her choice. There is an ending to this book where Yumi's 'death' isn't the end of the book or even the chapter. Instead, we see her go to the cognitive realm, watch the world changing as the pull of the spiritual realm gets stronger. Then she feels painter's call and the opportunity to return. She knows she is supposed to let herself pass, it's her duty, it is the way of the world, etc. She'll think of Painter's comment about the dramas and how sometimes stories end that way and that's ok. But then she thinks of how much she wants to live a normal life. To have friends and to own dresses and to make food and have experiences. And she thinks about how she has a choice. A real choice, with real consequences for herself, probably for the first time in her 1700 years of existence. And she makes the choice to be happy and to value herself. And then the book ends. The frustrating thing about the ending is that is *exactly what happened* There is no rewrite or head cannon required; given what we know about Sanderson's Cosmere, that's more or less exactly what happened. But instead of that deeply emotional and happy climax, we get an emotional and sad climax. Then in the epilogue Painter, acting melodramatic and serving more or less as a proxy for the portion of the audience who wants them to end up together, appears to wish that emotional ending out of existence. Of course no one was satisfied.

Hey Merphy, I'm sorry if you've addressed this elsewhere, but are you still reading Malazan or have you decided to drop it? I ask because Toll the Hounds is such a special book to me and I was really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. I understand that Reaper's Gale was a difficult read for you and I absolutely support you in stopping the series if it's too much for you, and of course you don't owe me an answer to my question but I thought I'd at least put it out there. Sending good vibes to you and your family!

I’ve been watching Merphy since late 2018. I have never seen Merph talk about her book, Perfection. I’ve never even seen her mention being a self published author. I’m guessing she doesn’t really like the book?

Eesh... I read "Annihilation" a couple of weeks ago and honestly - I don't get what all the fuss is about. That being said, some of my friends don't like titles that I enjoy (for example "The kingkiller chronicle"), so I guess it's a matter of taste. 🙂 My september titles would be "Brothers Karamazov" aaand... I'll probably start "The stormlight archive" since everyone is pretty positive about Sanderson's books.

Merphy, I was thinking about reading City of Saints and Madmen. But due to a couple of reasons, I have to use my library to get it. I found and audio edition in Libby. Do you think the surrealness of the book could translate well as an audio? Or should I wait for a physical format?

I really like "The sheepfarmer daughter" series, the second book is more a d&d quest than a military fantasy like the first one but really good. if you will finish the series my suggestion is to read the subsequent series "Paladin's Legacy", a pentalogy, wich is much better, at least in my opinion.

Ooh, I'm curious about that Annihilation video. I'm just finishing the book (I've read about 90% of it) based on your reactions to it, and I'm kinda just finding it "ok"? So far, it's interesting (and short) enough that I'll continue with the series, although not immediately. But I definitely don't love it. So I'm eager to see how that discussion from 2 people that clearly are more invested in it than I am, lol

You finish cold days and just start shaking your head, trying to understand how this freaking author keeps writing these amazing books. Then you read Skin Game and you won't be able to help telling everyone they need to read these damn Dresden books.
